This is a lovely colt with lots of scope. He is a great walker and Nigel loved his balance and behaviour when parading during the wet Sydney weather.
Yearling Bay Colt
- Sire: Epaulette (by Commands)
- Dam: Hanukkah (by Umatilla)
- Foal Date: November 15, 2018 (AUS)
He looks like a miler type, and one who will improve with age.
He is by EPAULETTE, three-quarter-brother to HELMET and winner of the G1 Golden Rose and G1 Doomben 10,000. He also placed second to Black Caviar in the G1 TJ Smith Stakes, and third to All Too Hard and Pierro in the G1 Caulfield Guineas.
He has sired 192 winners (to 9-Feb), including 12 at stakes-level in four different countries. His best progeny is SOQRAT, winner of three Group 1 events in South Africa. Whilst in Australia he has sired eight stakes-winners, including five at Group level. He continues to build a strong profile.
Out of the Umatilla mare HANUKKAH, this colt hails from the good family of MY MADONNA (third dam), matriarch of 47 winners at a very good strike rate of 72% of runners. Four have won at stakes level.
The best of this family is no doubt DIVINE MADONNA, an eight-time winner of more than $2m in earnings. Her wins include the VRC Emirates Stakes, VRC Myer Stakes, STC Queen of the Turf Stakes and MRC Toorak Handicap – all at Group 1 level. Here is one of her brilliant victories.
But other family runners are also notable. BLESSUM won seven races including the Group 3 Standish Hcp at Flemington, and also placed in the Group 1 Salinger Stakes (Flemington) and Group 1 Galaxy Hcp (Randwick). It is also worth noting that Blessum is a three-quarter-brother in blood to Hanukkah, being by Umatilla.
Hanukkah herself has already produced three winners, two of whom have won at metropolitan level including Hanukkah Gold who has won two of his four starts in Adelaide.
We are also pleased to report the three-year-old sister to this colt won a trial in NZ (Cambridge) in November before being returned to the paddock for a spell. You can watch the replay of this trial here. Listen for “the Epaulette filly” in the call, settling fourth before making a move in the straight.
Upon further research, we can also reveal that this colt is bred on the same Danehill / Umatillia cross as SCALES OF JUSTICE and four other stakes-winners.
