By the classy son of Snitzel who brilliantly won the G1 Australian Guineas, and whose young progeny show promise
Nigel found this colt to be in the mould of his sire – also showing a lot of the qualities he seeks in yearlings. Overall, he’s a very athletic style of horse.
“He’s a really attractive colt, that was clear from when we first saw him,” Nigel said.
“It’s important to note with him he’s a late foal and there’s a lot of improvement still to come. Nonetheless, he is already a nice size, has a good shoulder and a strong hindquarter.
“He looks right out of the mould of his father, a captivating type and a sprinter miler.”
The Sire – Wandjina
A son of Champion Sire SNITZEL, WANDJINA was a million-dollar yearling who became an outstanding three-year-old colt. He was precocious enough to win at two and twice placed fourth in stakes races including the highly rated G2 Todman Stakes at Rosehill.
At three, Wandjina placed in the G1 Caulfield Guineas before returning to win the G3 Hayes Stakes (1400m) and then the G1 Australian Guineas (1600m). He later placed against older gallopers including DISSIDENT, and beating CHAUTAUQUA, in the G1 All Aged Stakes.
“The most important thing in a horse is to have speed.” Gai Waterhouse reflected. “He was the fastest yearling I had and then the fastest two year-old. Speed is something they have to have … and he has it.”
Out of the blue hen mare La Bamba who has also produced Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint champion Inspiration and stakes-winners Lucky Unicorn and Provence, Wandjina retired to Newgate Farm. Of his first crop who are now three-year-olds, 27 are winners. It was pleasing to see Mamaragan score in the Group 2 Schweppes Skyline Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in early March. He gave his Newgate Farm based sire a very important first stakes-winner, and what looks to be his first Golden Slipper runner in a few weeks time.
His crop also includes three stakes-performers:
- Grand Scholar (1st MVRC Ranvet Hcp, Opus Group Hcp, 2nd MRC Vale Redoute’s Choice Stakes, L 3rd VRC Maribyrnong Trial Stakes, LR)
- Express Pass (3rd VRC Danehill Stakes, G2, MRC Vale Redoute’s Choice S., LR)
- Deep Chill (1st ATC Sledmere Stud Maiden 2YO P., 3rd ATC Canonbury S., G3)
The Dam – Swiss Vault
Swiss Vault was a sound racehorse with a strong record. Very few horses win seven races. All of her wins came over sprinting distances between 1000m and 1300m – with her career highlight her placing in the Group 3 Irwin Stakes at Morphettville (1100m).
She has proven herself as a producing mare – having had five winners already. All of her winners were consistently sprinters, having all won at six furlongs. This matches this colt physically on type, which is always a positive.
Her best progeny, El Magico, has claimed a black-type placing in in the Manini Classic in Adelaide. The consistency in her stock bode well for this colt.
