The 2017 NZ Bloodstock Karaka sale

Posted on Posted in News, Ownership

The 2017 yearling sales kick off around Australia and New Zealand in early January, starting of course with the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

This is a tremendous sale, a great atmosphere, and as usual the catalogue looks strong. I predict the buying competition will be just as strong for the better types on offer through the ring.

For personal reasons, I am travelling to the UK in early January. So I will bypass the Gold Coast sale this year and am first focusing on the NZ Bloodstock National Yearling Sales series at the Karaka sales complex, Auckland, in late January.

NZB Yearling Sale

This sale series running from January 30th to February 5th, has a great history of producing quality horses of the type and pedigree that I really like. The success of NZ horses in Australia's biggest races, from a smaller percentage of the thoroughbred racing population, is outstanding.

We visited 11 farms in New Zealand in late November, and inspected almost 400 yearlings ahead of this sale in January.

Doing this pre-work helps us target a number of horses in certain categories and budget ranges to reinspect a second time when we arrive at Karaka. Of course there will be more to see when we arrive, but this work in advance aids our selection process and engagement with our owners.

Note that I tend not to purchase on speculation, but work with my clients and prospective clients in advance to allow them to buy into these horses at cost and be part of the exciting process of selecting our next good racehorse together.

I encourage you to register your interest in advance so we can discuss our approach and our shortlist in the weeks leading up to the sale.

Please watch this video below for a summary of our visit to NZ in November. I can't wait to get back to Karaka and go shopping. Join us!

Regards,
Nigel
