Getting pretty close

Posted on Posted in News

On a couple of occasions in her career so far, most notably at Geelong recently, PRETTY MAMA has raced well and could be considered unlucky not to have scored her maiden victory.

At Ladbrokes Park (Sandown) on Wednesday she again ran well and went close to winning. But again experienced a touch of bad luck.

At her previous start at Geelong she found herself in a terrible position and went to the line untested. This time she copped a squeeze soon after leaving the barriers and dropped out to last early in running.

Luke Currie calmly poked her up between runners soon afterward and positioned her well on the home turn. So well that he didn’t have to circumnavigate the entire field to make his run, but rode Pretty Mama through the gaps out of the turn and into the open space at Sandown.

Her closing sprint was very strong to finish second to the talented ARAMOANA, beaten just over a length. Had she not received the bump soon after the start, Luke felt she could have been positioned where the winner was and ultimately could have won the race.

Regardless, connections are pretty sure she is close to securing her first victory. Let’s hope that happens at her next start.

We have a number of runners stepping out onto the track over the next ten days.

At Cranbourne on Sunday, COSTALOT returns to the races. She enjoyed a good spell in late Autumn after two encouraging races when running fifth at Ballarat and Cranbourne in March. She will wear Winkers on Sunday in a 1200m 3yo fillies race. She is a filly that will probably appreciate a little further as her preparation continues, but we hope for a bold run first up for her owners and rider Beau Mertens.

DISTANT SKY searches for his next win after being so consistent in recent times. We know his career is limited to the lower benchmark grades, but we don’t have a more sound or happier horse in the stable. We think he can win one or two races a year which along with several placings can pay his bills and provide connections a good source of enjoyment. We just have to place him well. Dwayne Dunn takes the ride in the Class 1 1400m at Cranbourne, if we go there. Otherwise there are other options next week.

As the week progresses, Tiny’s Legacy heads to Wangaratta on Monday. Manapine will finally step up to a suitable distance of 2400m next Wednesday, in the BM78 race at Ladbrokes Park. Sorenata also heads to Sandown for an 1800m race after her strong win at Bairnsdale last start.

Later next week we expect to have a number of runners at various tracks: Itchicoo Park, Cadabra, Groovin’, Blitz ‘n’ Magic and Zoophoria are all nominated.

Good luck to all connections over the next week.
