First stakes-winner for Wandjina – and we just bought one of his fillies

It was pleasing to see Mamaragan score in the Group 2 Schweppes Skyline Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday. He gave his Newgate Farm based sire Wandjina a very important first stakes-winner, and what looks to be his first Golden Slipper runner in a few weeks time.

The reason for us being pleased with this result is that it provides some support of Nigel’s view that Wandjina will be a successful sire. He is doing a fine job as it is, with 27 winners and three stakes-performers so early in his career (his oldest progeny are just three). But it is great for a young stallion to be represented by a stakes-winner on a premier two-year-old lead up to the Golden Slipper.

At the recent Inglis Classic Yearling sale, Nigel purchased a lovely filly by Wandjina at a price considered bargain level (just $22,000 plus GST). She is out of a winning daughter of good broodmare sire High Chaparral and stakes-winner Hennessy Waltz, from a good winner-producing family.
