I have been in New Zealand this week for the Karaka Sales and it's a busy time for all. As usual NZB and the vendors have done a magnificent job in looking after everyone and we have seen some lovely horses.
We tried and failed once or twice on the first day which was disappointing but the market for good individuals is very strong. I have been taken by the first-crop yearlings by the Epsom Derby winner Sir Percy (GB) who stands at John Thompson's Rich Hill Stud and of that good racehorse Alamosa who stands at Bill Gleeson's Wellfield Lodge.
We missed out on the Sir Percy colt I really liked but we got lucky with lot 435, a filly by Alamosa and a half-sister to the Group 3 winner Moatize, purchased on behalf of Alan Young and Joe Maltese for $52,500. Alan was looking for a filly with a ckassic outlook and we think this filly is the right type. "She's a half-sister to a good horse in Moatize, out of a Zabeel mare out of a Bletchingly mare and I really like Alamosa so I could not be happier." says Alan. "I couldn't believe we were able to buy her for that the way the market has been this week but we would not swap her for anything."
I'm still on the lookout at the sale on Wednesday and Thursday and have my eye on one or two so hopeful that we can add another one to the stable.
