THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF DENNIS

A sweltering hot day at Wangaratta on Tuesday, a perfect setting for the further adventures of Dennis, aka Daneson.

I was delighted to have found a 1400m Maiden for this horse and we decided to fit the blinkers to aid his concentration. He is very genuine but he can find himself more interested in what's going on around him at times. The small field was a plus, class opposition in the shape of David Hayes's Aashiq and a sweltering hot day were the negatives.

Craig Robertson was unable to ride but fortunately we were able to find a very able substitute in Luke Currie, who gave Danseson the ride we have always wanted to but have been unable to due to the way races have been run. With the comfort zone of being able to settle into his stride early on without having to hustle and take a position, 'Dennis' did the business.

Last to the turn he swept around them into the straight and accelerated so quickly he found himself in front 200m out, thinking the job was done and then waited for the other horses. Luke put a couple around his backside and Daneson was coming away again at the finish to win in good style.

As Luke said afterwards, "He got there too soon and then thought the job was done, but he found plenty for me when I asked him and he was always going to win."

Bred by Liverpool Street Investments, Daneson (3 g Snippetson - Two Left Feet, by Danzero) is raced by a terrific bunch of people including Alan Young and Joe Maltese who braved the heat to see him win. He is one of three yearlings I bought at the 2010 Scone Yearling Sale, two of them having raced and now two of them have won, Railblazer (Mossman) being the other.

I would also like to take this opportunity to praise the course curator. A dead track with a lovely cushion of grass that raced fairly. I have had several horses jarring up from races of late but it was a real bonus to get to the track today and see the condition of the course, which was immaculate.

The images of today are in Daneson's gallery, you can see them here
