From the outstanding family of BOLD PROMISE, MERLENE & CAPITALIST

In the 2021 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale, we were amazed to be able to purchase this filly by the promising young stallion ASTERN, for such a low price.

This filly, now two, has been given time to develop since her purchase in early March. She has been educated and passed with flying colours. Nigel has been really pleased with her over the past few weeks during her orientation program, displaying balance, athleticism and a great attitude.

This time we have given her has been a blessing. She looks absolutely stunning having benefited from a few months in the paddock. She is showing all the signs that she could be a two-year-old prospect as she prepares for a trial and perhaps even racing in December/January.

Take a look at this video from October.

Here is another video from 5 October, courtesy of renowned pre-training operation Leneva Park. We could not be happier with this filly’s progress since we purchased her. The way she looks now, combined with the strength of her pedigree, belies her purchase price of $14,000+GST.

This filly’s sire, ASTERN, was the winner of the Group 1 ATC Golden Rose along with several other Group races at the ages of two and three. He ran second in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes behind Flying Artie, beating Star Turn, Russian Revolution, Extreme Choice – one of the very best editions of the time-honoured race.

Take a look at this race record highlights.

At 2

1st Silver Slipper S (G2), 1,100m at Rosehill, beating Defcon, Mount Panorama.

1st Kindergarten S (G3), 1,100m at Randwick, dead-heating with El Divino, beating Geneteau, Lionhearted.

1st Maiden race, 1,000m at Randwick, by 2½l, beating Niccolance.

At 3

1st Golden Rose S (G1), 1,400m at Rosehill, by 2¼l, beating Omei Sword, Impending, Divine Prophet.

1st Run To The Rose (G2), 1,200m at Rosehill, beating Star Turn, Impending, El Divino,

2nd Coolmore Stud S (G1), 1,200m at Flemington, to Flying Artie, beating Star Turn, Russian Revolution, Extreme Choice.

2nd Roman Consul S (G2), 1,200m at Randwick, by a head, to Russian Revolution, beating Capitalist.

Timeform rated him 126 at his peak. He was a seriously good colt on the track with a serious good pedigree.

He is the highest-rated son of Medaglia d’Oro from Champion broodmare Essaouira. That makes him a half-brother to Champion 3yo filly ALIZEE. His third dam is the fast Group 1 winner LA BARAKA and his fourth dam is Champion 3yo TRISCAY.

Retiring to stud at Darley, Astern has made a stellar start to his stallion career. He has already sired 18 first-crop winners in Australia/NZ (now early in their three-year-old season) including:

  • Group 3 winner SERADESS (Moonee Valley Scarborough Stakes)
  • LISTED winner DANGER STRYKES in New Zealand, and
  • Sydney winner BRIGANTINE who also placed in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington.

His Northern Hemisphere first-crop is also performing, with a further 11 winners including the Group 2 winner SAIL BY and three other stakes-performers – from just 28 runners!

In the First-Season Sires list (2020/21), Astern’s winners-to-runners rate was 40%, second only to Star Turn with 46%. Behind them in this category were Winning Rupert (38%) and Capitalist (33%).

DEMAND APPLAUSE (by Congrats) has produced a winner of two races – her first foal. She hails from one of the very best families in the thoroughbred world.

Take a look at the quality in this filly’s pedigree. Her third dam is Top Filly BOLD PROMISE. She has produced Group 1 winners MERLENE (Golden Slipper) and MISS PENNYMONEY (Newmarket Hcp), plus Group winning two-year-old COMPULSION.

Of the 140 descendents of Bold Promise to race, 64% are winners and more than 9% are stakes-winners. That list includes another Golden Slipper winner (CAPITALIST) and an Oaks winner (DEAR DEMI).

We have take a deeper look into this filly’s pedigree matching of Demand Applause to Astern. This pedigree has strong similarities to four Group 1 winning sprinters in the USA: DICKINSON and ELATE, PLUM PRETTY and BOLT D’ORO. All are by the outstanding stallion MEDAGLIA D’ORO or his sons, out of mares by A.P. Indy or his sons (such as Congrats).

In fact, when Medaglia D’Oro (sire of Astern) is matched with A.P. Indy (grandsire of Demand Applause) anywhere in the pedigree, the results are proven: 6% stakes-winners-to-runners and a winners-to-runners rate much higher than average.

Even the quickest of inspections of this filly’s pedigree shows the strength of legendary sires in her fourth generation: Sadler’s Wells, Danehill, Rory’s Jester, Seattle Slew, Mr. Prospector, Robert and Luskin Star. A lovely blend of colonial and international bloodlines.

If she can perform on the racetrack, this filly can be a valuable broodmare for the future.
