It was very pleasing for our team and group of owners to have Mercante win his maiden at Ballarat.
The 3YO son of Dundeel was an expensive sales purchase at the Easter Sale last year. While he had shown a lot at home, his big frame and reaching action made it difficult for him to put it all together on race day.
His first two starts saw him defeated by 10L and 13L – clearly not a true indication of his ability.
However, up to 2000m and in his third start the penny clearly dropped. He chased beautifully when balanced down the straight and defeated a nice field of older stayers.
He has an outstanding aerobic capacity, a beautiful stride and will make a great stayer for the future.
Hopefully for his ownership group he can keep on his winning way!
