Not all that Subrising

Starting the longest price in the field on Sunday in the Ladbrokes Odds Surge BM64 Handicap at Ladbrokes Park (Sandown), Subrising put in an outstanding performance at just her third start to fly home and score her first victory.

Still eligible for maiden class, Subrising was set a challenge by Nigel who has been buoyant about the future for this daughter of Needs Further.

The small field, spacious track and perfect turf surface with some give in it was just what Nigel was looking for when selecting this race. To win in the manner she did in good time, off a good pace and against a field of previous winners, was an outstanding result.

For connections of this filly, and for Nigel and Susanna, this win was extra special as Subrising was the first weanling purchase for Blackiston Racing. The Inglis 2021 Great Southern Weanling Sale was just a few months after Nigel’s riding accident at Ballarat – which was a shake up for he and Susanna it must be said. So some retail therapy was the order of the day and this filly was the result.

By excellent Tasmanian-based stallion Needs Further, Subrising is out of the winning Savoire Vivre mare Grisbi’s run.

To be fair, her pedigree page was not that strong but aided by some good pedigree analysis, there was a lot to like about the mating of Grisbi’s Run to Needs Further. The mating produces a cross of Fairy King (grandsire of Needs Further) over his brother Sadler’s Wells (grandsire of Grisbi’s Run).

Needs Further himself was proving his value as a sire via the deeds of Group 1 winner Mystic Journey, among other good horses. However, the weanling filly’s physique and attitude at the sale were the clinching motivations to purchase.

Congratulations to all the owners who formed a co-ownership group when Subrising was a weanling. It has been a wonderful journey so far and fingers crossed for a successful career.
