Outback Joe lifts the Adelaide Cup

Very proud to say that Outback Joe came, saw and conquered to win the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on Monday.

Outback Joe Adel CupIt was a very special day to see Outback Joe fight so hard, given a great ride by Chad Schofield, to outstay the reigning Perth Cup winner Black Tycoon, in a driving finish, much to the delight of his owner/breeder, Dennis Marks.

As most of you would know by now, I am the fourth trainer to have Outback Joe and it is great testament to the faith and belief of Dennis Marks in his own horse to persevere.

By Elvstroem out of the great champion Let’s Elope, Outback Joe has done a super job to peak twice this preparation, winning the Bagot Handicap at Flemington and now the Adelaide Cup.

He had become a favourite within the stable before his star began to rise and it was an emotional moment to see him win so bravely and then see the joy on Dennis Marks’s face as he led him back to scale.

Joseph was taken to Adelaide by Gemma Hayward who rides him most days and dotes on the horse and she has been a major part of the Cup win.

We came very close to landing a feature race double when You’re So Good failed by a diminishing head to land the Listed Matrice Stakes (1200m) the race immediately following the Cup.

While I was disappointed that You’re So Good fell narrowly short of winning another stakes race I was delighted with her effort. She tested the patience of myself and her owners through the Spring but to see her back approaching her best form is very satisfying.
