Three lengths the magic margin for Zoophoria

Zoophoria is racing consistently well this preparation. At her sixth run for the campaign today at Sale, she dominated the Subway Sale Fillies & Mares BM64 event in winning by three lengths – the same winning margin in each of her three victories to date.

Nigel and connections led by owner/breeders Arrowfield Stud and John Leaver, had the choice of running at Sandown or Flemington this past week. With two wins and two second placings in her last four starts, it was tempting to set her for a metropolitan race.

Being a daughter of Animal Kingdom out of a Redoute’s Choice mare, and grand-daughter of Group 1 Oakleigh Plate winner Miss Kounikova, a metropolitan success could greatly aid Zoophoria’s broodmare career.

But a wide barrier on Wednesday prompted the decision to scratch her from Wednesday’s race. Then, knowing that she is still quite raw, physically and mentally, the decision was made to tackle the easier BM64 option at Sale with the expectation of another victory. And that expectation was proven correct.

Circumstances led to yet another rider change for this race. Ben Thompson is a rider Nigel has great respect for, so there was no hesitation in booking Ben when Zoophoria’s previous winning riders (Jordan Childs and Joe Bowditch) were not available at Sale. Ben rode a great race, allowing Zoophoria to stride freely but under control to sit comfortably second in running. Making their move at the right moment rounding the home corner, Ben and Zoophoria were never headed.

Each time she steps out onto the track, Zoophoria is learning and building confidence. Her recent consistency is proof that she is a much better race mare now compared to just six months ago. But we believe she can still improve another length or two next preparation. In the straight, you can Zoohoria can improve her head carriage and rhythm when in full flight. That makes these victories even more pleasing, looking to the future.

With her third victory now scored in terrific fashion (watch the race replay here), maybe now is the right time to find a suitable metropolitan race for Zoophoria before a well earned spell. Nigel and connections will discuss over coming days. In the back of their mind is the prospect of an even better race mare in the Autumn.
