Cup dream over for Outback Joe

Outback JoeOur Melbourne Cup dream for Outback Joe is over after he suffered another setback that has forced his retirement.

Outback Joe cooled down with some thickening in a tendon last week and while he will be fine, the pressure of training and racing will only compound the issue.

His owner and breeder Dennis Marks only wants the best for his horses and while he is disappointed the horse comes first and Outback Joe has run his last race.

I was the fourth trainer to get Outback Joe and he came to us rated 53. Dennis had been advised to retire him but he believed in the horse and I am grateful to his perseverance and thank him for sending Outback Joe to us to train.

For us he won four races, notably the Bagot Handicap under Oisin Murphy and the Adelaide Cup under Chad Schofield.

The Adelaide Cup was his last appearance on the track and the thrill of that day and joy it gave not just Dennis but all the team at the stable will stay with me for a long time. After a period of rehabilitation he is going to embark on a show ring career and I’m delighted Dennis wants his horse to be active and not left to be bored in a paddock.
